Excavator Operator Trainees at Somatua Training Center Focus on Daily Maintenance and Inspection in Second Week Timika, 13 March 2024 – Excavator Operator trainees from Intake 16 at Somatua Training Center entered their second week of training with a focus on Daily Maintenance and Inspection (P2H) of excavators. The session took place at the work area behind the Government Housing Complex on Jalan SP2, Timika.
P2H (Daily Maintenance and Inspection) is an important responsibility for heavy equipment operators to ensure the condition of the equipment before it is operated. This is essential for maintaining safety and ensuring smooth operations.
Yohanes, the Excavator Operator instructor, explained that the students have gone through several stages of training, such as:
- An introduction to the theory of heavy equipment components and the functions of the controls on an excavator.
- Practical training in operating the excavator, including how to move the boom up and down, extend and retract the arm, and load a dump truck.

"The students already understand and grasp the theory. However, their equipment handling still needs improvement because they are still stiff in operating it. For example, the use of the bucket and arm is still rough," explained Yohanes.
Yohanes emphasized the importance of P2H for heavy equipment operators. “Before operating the equipment, operators must perform a checklist to inspect its condition. This is to ensure the equipment is in prime condition and safe to use,” he said.
P2H includes several things, such as:
- Checking oil and fuel
- Check hydraulic pressure
- Ensure that all components of the equipment are functioning properly
- Perform tool cleaning
The training classes at Somatua Training Center are designed to enhance students' skills and knowledge in operating heavy equipment safely and efficiently.

With a focus on Pre-Operation Checks (P2H), students are expected to understand the importance of maintaining equipment condition and be able to perform maintenance independently.
We want to ensure that students who graduate from this training have the skills and knowledge required to become reliable and professional heavy equipment operators," said Yohanes.
Somatua Training Center is committed to producing skilled and job-ready excavator operators. Through comprehensive training and experienced instructors, students are expected to master both the theory and practice of excavator operation effectively.(STC)
