Central Papua — The rhythmic sound of hammering blended with the fresh scent of timber set the scene for a wood construction training session held for students from Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua. Under the guidance of Mr. Imam, the head carpenter and training instructor, participants gained first-hand experience in developing skills that will serve as valuable assets in their future careers.

The training took place in an open workshop area, where each participant was given the opportunity to practice both basic and advanced wood construction techniques. With decades of experience in carpentry, Mr. Imam taught everything from precise measurements and safe wood cutting to the process of assembling structural frameworks.

“Our goal is not only to teach how to hold a saw or drive a nail, but also to instill precision and a professional work ethic,” said Mr. Imam when met during the training session.

The students appeared enthusiastic in following the instructions. Some admitted it was their first time handling carpentry tools, yet they were excited to learn directly from an experienced practitioner. “At first it was quite difficult, but after being taught step by step, I began to get the hang of it,” said Yanto, one of the training participants.

This wood construction training is part of a skills development program designed to prepare the young generation of Central Papua to compete in the construction sector. In addition to technical skills, participants were also taught the importance of workplace safety, time management, and teamwork.

With this training, it is hoped that the students will return to their respective regions equipped with new skills they can put to use—whether to start their own businesses or to work on construction projects in need of skilled labor. (STC)
