Theory without practice in learning will be futile. Students will not gain a deep understanding of how to apply the lessons they have learned. Likewise, classroom learning is necessary to build understanding and enhance cognitive abilities to grasp what will be practiced. The training activities conducted at Somatua Training Center combine both aspects. Students are guided theoretically with the help of instructors in the classroom and then apply the knowledge they have acquired through practical sessions outside. Mastery of theoretical material may not always correspond directly to practical skills, but both are equally important to balance students' cognitive abilities and motor skills.
Somatua Training Center always strives to maintain a balance in imparting knowledge to its students. Therefore, as in previous training programs, theory sessions are also conducted in the classroom. Currently, Somatua Training Center is providing training for refresher trainees, all of whom are enrolled in construction-related courses. Due to the large number of participants, classroom instruction is divided into two groups, with sessions held on Fridays and Saturdays. From Monday to Thursday, students are given the opportunity to practice in the field.
Today (Saturday, May 14, 2022) marks the first day of the theory session in the classroom. The group of training students participated seriously and enthusiastically. Mr. Abraham Marandof, the instructor, provided material related to Occupational Health and Safety (K3) in the construction field.
“We study construction in a broad sense. Talking about construction means covering several aspects of the field. Generally, we understand it as building development, but it doesn’t only involve concrete or wooden structures; it also includes iron and steel, especially in large-scale buildings,” explained Mr. Abraham Marandof. He then added that while all these aspects are studied, the fundamental principle is to comply with Occupational Health and Safety (K3), as this is a crucial foundation for any construction worker.
“Since this is the first meeting, I am providing an introduction to the basics of Occupational Health and Safety (K3), as well as an overview of construction tools and blueprint drawings for budget estimates (RAB). Next, we will move on to the theoretical discussion about construction stages, classification of basic structural systems in buildings, and material requirement analysis,” he explained.
Today's classroom training session is expected to boost the participants’ enthusiasm to gain more knowledge in upcoming meetings and serve as a foundation for applying what they learn in practical work, all while continuing to uphold proper Occupational Health and Safety (K3) practices. Upon completing their training and entering the workforce, the students can become ambassadors of Somatua Training Center through the skills and attitudes they have developed during their training at the center.
