Improving the quality of Papua’s human resources to be globally competitive is the mission of Somatua Training Center (STC). The presence of STC in Timika aims to enhance the quality of Papua’s workforce. For this reason, STC invited young people from several vocational high schools around Mimika to participate in a Seminar and Workshop titled “Improving the Quality of Papua’s Human Resources to be Globally Competitive.”

“Thank you to the young people from various backgrounds and vocational high schools who have participated in this two-day event held on November 29-30, 2022. Somatua Training Center is here to bring light to the people of Papua, especially the younger generation. That is why this place was established—to create skilled workers, particularly in the mining sector and other industries,” expressed Maximus Tipagau in his welcoming speech as the head of the Somatua Foundation, addressing the workshop participants.

The seminar and workshop were attended by seventy participants from six vocational high schools (SMKs) in Timika and its surroundings, as well as youths from Kamoro Jaya village. They enthusiastically took part in the two-day event. The materials presented included Papua’s demographic bonus potential that can produce globally competitive human resources, challenges of the workforce in the digital era, and an introduction to STC and its 14 training programs. Most of the time was dedicated to practical activities guided by STC instructors.

STC plans to make this program a regular, ongoing agenda. Besides offering regular classes, the seminar and workshop activities are expected to provide Papua’s youth with opportunities for short-term learning to enhance their knowledge and insights about the working world, especially in the mining industry.
